Azizul settles for silver after defeat by Frenchman in final

By LIM TEIK HUAT , the Star

PETALING JAYA: There was no shame in defeat for cyclist Azizul Hasni Awang in settling for a silver medal at the World Track Championships in Pruszskow yesterday.
The pint-sized 21-year-old from Terengganu had entered a territory where no Malaysian has encroached before after beating Australia’s top sprinter Shane Perkins 2-0 in the men’s sprint semi-finals to assure himself of at least the silver.
But that was not what he was wishing for and Azizul almost turn a childhood dream into a reality by coming from behind to beat burly Frenchman Gregory Bauge to force sudden-death.
Bauge, part of the French gold medal-winning team on Wednesday, won the first heat in a photo-finish and later crushed Azizul’s hopes of achieving sporting immortality by winning the deciding heat.

Malaysian sprint coach John Beasley said that Azizul had truly earned the respect of cycling world with his great run and believed that he was on the right track to contend strongly for the Olympic gold in London in three years’ time. “Speedwise, he is on par with the other top cyclists. His disadvantage was his physical size but he showed how strong hearted is his determination not to give up the fight,” said Beasley in a telephone interview.
“He got the respect of the world and it’s a matter of time before he becomes the world champion.” Azizul had beaten the last surviving British challenger Ross Edgar 2-1 to enter the semi-finals on Saturday. After narrowly failing to enter the keirin final two days ago, Azizul showed great determination to keep his campaign alive by beating Bauge, who was fastest in qualifying on 9.930 in the last 16 to earn direct qualification to the quarter-finals.
The double Asian champion got into the last 16 after prevailing over fellow Malaysian Rizal Tisin, who claimed bronze in the 1km time trial on Friday.
Josiah, the third Malaysian to qualify for the knockout stages, was beaten by Matthew Crampton of Britain in the first round of the knockout stage.
Azizul had led the Malaysian charge into the top 24 of the knockout stages after posting 10.120 to finish 12th in his qualifying run for his best effort for the year. Despite this, Azizul relinquished his Asian record of 10.160 set in last year’s world meet in Manchester to China’s Zhang Lei, who clocked 10.116 to finish seventh.

My comments:

Congrats Zulhasni. Now can see the results after years of hard and consistent works. Some sports doesnt requires huge size, some do. In cycling it shows. we malaysian can take this event. May London's Olympics Zulhasni will be the best. Malaysia Boleh!!

Hasli fails to find the target again

PETALING JAYA: The country’s top pistol shooter Hasli Izwan Amir Hasan fell to another defeat by national trainee Khalel Abdullah in the Selangor Shooting Championships at the Subang Shooting Range yesterday.

The Beijing Olympian, who has been the undisputed top male pistol shooter in the country over the last five years, was beaten into second place in the men’s 25m standard pistol event.

Khalel posted 553 points to win the event for Armed Forces ahead of the more illustrious Hasli, who scored 548. Darham Ali of Police shot 545 for the bronze.

Izwan Amir Hasan lost to national trainee Khalel Abdullah in the 25m standard pistol event.

Khalel’s winning effort helped Forces to clinch the team title with a combined total of 1,640 points.

Hasli was beaten by Khalel in the national shooting championships in December last year.

Hasli has not been training much due to work commitments and it was reflected in his inability to win his pet event — the 25m rapid fire pistol title on Friday.

The third day of the shooting meet saw the shooters firing blanks again as none came close to bettering the national records in the various categories.

My Comments:

Being an Olympian doesn't means that they will always have to win. For layman, as an Olympian or Olympic gold medalist, they should win always. No such thing applicable in sports. Hasli is just a normal human, after a big game, there should be a transition period. This year is the transition year. Give him some space to aligned his live. so many thing he had left before the Olympics. I believe Hasli is a good officer in KBS, and knowing him, he's an responsible officer. So being 2nd is just enough for him at this moment. I'm sure he will come back to the top within some time, hopefully he will get his dreamed Olympic Gold Medal in London. Amin...

Football Oh Malaysia....

"Good team depends on their coach, and coaches the only to be blamed". The most insecure profession in this entire world I would say Malaysian football Coach. If we managed to gathered all the resources to pay Sir Alex Ferguson, or Jose Morinho, or even Gus Hiddink to be Malaysian Coach, the results I expected to be the same.

As shabby used to say in Jozan talk show, “go play other sports”. I’m strongly agreed with him. But if we are really serious to involve in the international football scenario, we have to change. It’s not the FAM, it’s the entire populations attitude towards sports. Nurture the sports culture in everybody. Change our diets, change our schools systems, and change our attitudes. Are we ready and willing to do that, than the change will took place. Not just football, even other sports will improve their achievement internationally.

Physical educations teachers should be given more teaching hours. Ask them to concentrate with the sports activities, do not teach other subjects. Or they only should teach sports and health related subjects in schools. Employ more PE teachers in schools, other subjects should only started at 10 a.m and schools will only adjourned at 3 p.m. as the results we would have more healthy pupils, bigger pool of talented athletes, and for sure more higher quality of athletes can be developed.

No specific sports should be exposed to the lower primary school students, multidimensions physical fitness should be developed to these pupils. From standard four, they can be segregate to their perspective sports. Lets them enjoy their fame within their age groups. When they reached secondary schools the real talent and top athlete can be trace. Train them to the highest level, only some will success to play at the higher level. If they didn’t manage to play at the higher level, at least they would have better physical conditions.

Then we will see more ‘Jalur Gemilang’ waived in the international arena. Then we can start to count or predict on how may Olympic gold medal we could collect. Or we can start to bid for hosting World Cup. If we keep continuing our current traditional method, we will keep arguing on our athlete performance. We need high performance coach to be a Sports Minister. We need sports educated person to be a sports minister, enough lawyers elected to be the sports minister, enough agriculture graduates to be sports administrators. We need right people for the right place. Are we ready?

Football associations belong to the footballer, not just football enthusiasts. If we want to see football success, we have to do the quantum leap. For me, there is no difference between current footballers and Arwah Mohktar Dahari. I would say that most of the current athletes can run faster than Arwah. But almost all of our footballer cant have the speed of Rooney, cant have the agility of Ronaldinho, and they cant even have the fitness level as good as the Korean player. The Koreans has done their quantum leap way back in 1982. But not us. When bro???
